President's Message

Believe it or not, spring is fast approaching, and the IMACC Conference at Allerton House is coming up soon! This year many sessions will give us a chance to see specific ways in which faculty are implementing the ideas of the AMATYC Standards in their classrooms in ways that really work. Some of the other activities scheduled will also give us a big picture view of mathematics teaching reform and its implications.

The conference, April 3-5, will begin with check-in and a social hour on Thursday evening. Friday will be a full day, leading off with our featured speaker, Stephen Rodi of Austin Community College in Texas. Steve is Chairperson of the MAA Committee on Two-Year Colleges and a former AMATYC President. (Some of you may remember Steve's Allerton visit when he was AMATYC President.) Elsewhere in this issue of the ConneXion you'll find what Steve plans to do. Hold on to your hats!

The conference will also feature other sessions on developmental mathematics, geometry, statistics, calculus, liberal arts mathematics, math for elementary teachers, computer science, and the latest in the use of graphing calculator technology. If you plan to attend one of the calculator sessions and have the particular calculator model to be used, please bring it with you, although we will have a limited number of loaner calculators for use during these sessions. We will finish off with a spirited panel discussion, picking up on some of the themes of Steve Rodi's presentation and looking at other implications of mathematics reform.

There is also time in the schedule for enjoying the beautiful Allerton House grounds and for informal discussion with colleagues from around the state. For more details see the schedule of events included in this issue.

As I reflect on this past year, I am awed by how IMACC is blessed with such a host of talented people! People make IMACC the great organization it is. I want to thank you for your willingness to serve IMACC, your helpful suggestions, and your encouragement during my term as President. I look forward to seeing you at Allerton House. Encourage your colleagues--especially the new ones--to come along!

Karl M. Zilm, President
