Nominations for Awards for Excellence

An award for mathematics excellence (ME Award) is given at the annual AMATYC conference in even numbered years. This award is intended for educators who have made outstanding contributions to mathematics or mathematics education at the two year college. Nominations for this award are due to Marilyn Mays, North Lake College, 5001 MacArthur Blvd, Irving, TX 75038-3899 by February 15, 1996.

According to a new AMATYC Board policy, nominees will not be notified that they are under consideration for this award. Those individuals, affiliates or institutions who wish to nominate someone should provide materials including three letters of recommendation and a three page vitae to support the nomination.

The ME Award winner is chosen by a committee consisting of one representative from each region who are selected at the regional meetings at the conferences in odd numbered years. The past president chairs the committee. A point system is used for the selection process: national reputation (25 pts); leadership and activities in professional organizations (20 pts); professional presentations (10 pts); publications (10 pts); memberships or professional activities on a regional, state and national scale (10 pts); and other contributions to mathematics or mathematics education (15 pts).

AMATYC Executive Board members are ineligible until two years have elapsed since leaving the Board.

Travel Grants for ICME-8 in Seville, Spain

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has applied to the NSF for funds to permit travel support for US mathematics teachers at all levels, mathematics supervisors, teacher educators and researchers to participate in the 1996 International Congress on Mathematics Education (ICME-8) in Seville, Spain, July 14-21, 1996.

Application forms for support and the first announcement of the Congress may be obtained by writing Department I, NCTM, 1906 Association Drive, Reston, VA 22091-1593, or calling 703-620-9840 X 113 by faxing 703-476-2970 or by e-mail at infocentral@nctm.org. Completed applications must be received in the NCTM office by March 15, 1996. Applicants will be notified by April 30, 1996. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Applications will be evaluated by a panel of mathematics educators and mathematicians under the terms of a proposal submitted to the NSF. If the proposal is funded, recipients of grants for travel support to ICME-8 may not supplement them with other NSF funds.

Currently, it is the intention of NSF's funding program to provide no additional funds on its other regular grants for travel to ICME-8 in 1996. However, an individual who does not receive a travel grant may use regular NSF grant funds subject to the usual restrictions and prior approval requirements.

Questionnaire - Mathematics for Elementary Teachers Course

The Illinois Articulation Initiative, the NCTM Standards, IMACC/ISMAA Articulation Guide and the AMATYC Pre-Calculus Standards have generated a new and timely interest in the Mathematics for Elementary Teachers course. Sharing ideas on this course is often complicated by the fact that on many campuses there is only one instructor teaching this course. If you are interested in communicating with others who teach this course either personally, via the ConneXion, or in a session at the Allerton Conference in April, please respond to the questions below and return it to:
