President's Message

Greetings to you from the President's desk. As I write, the Fall semester is coming to a close. The Holiday season will be past by the time you receive this newsletter. I wish you the best for 1996 and the new academic term.

Richland C.C. hosted the fall IMACC board meeting on October 14, 1995. The board met from 9:00 AM to noon discussing the next Allerton Meeting and other business. At noon Vernon Kays and James Jones demonstrated IMACC's World-Wide Web home page (http://www.richland.cc.il.us/imacc). Richland C.C. provided a nice lunch prior to our adjournment.

The November meeting of AMATYC in Little Rock was well attended by IMACC members. This meeting served as an official presentation of the AMATYC's new standards document: CROSSROADS IN MATHEMATICS, Standards for Introductory College Mathematics before Calculus. I believe that this is a very important document that will be a catalyst for sweeping curricular change. Whether you agree or disagree with its content, you should definitely become familiar with this document.

I was also proud to represent IMACC at the affiliate President's Luncheon in Little Rock. IMACC was mentioned by AMATYC officers several times as an example for other affiliates. Positive features noted were our Allerton meeting, the ConneXion and our World-Wide Web home page.

Plans for the Allerton Meeting on April 18-20, 1996 are nearly complete. Please plan ahead to attend the new Thursday afternoon workshops on Parkland's campus. These sessions include a workshop on a new version of DERIVE, a tour of Parkland's distance learning center, an IMACC Board tour of FRASCA aviation, and a possible tour of "the Cave", the virtual reality room of the University of Illinois' Beckman Institute.

Friday's opening session will feature an entertaining talk by Dr. Joe Gallian of the University of Minnesota-Duluth on driver's license de-coding. Friday evening's entertainment will be a magic show by Don Oltz, President of the Society of American Magicians. On Saturday, William Thayer will give a demonstration and talk on the mathematics of juggling. Registration forms are at the end of this issue. More details will be in the next ConneXion issue.
